Enhancing facility management for buildings using BIM (case study: model of a medical building)

Joud Mohammad Shbeeb , Lama Adel Saoud

Facilities management is one of the main challenges in the maintenance and operation of buildings. The use of BIM in facility management is an effective tool that helps to provide information, identify maintenance needs, plan a budget and direct efforts to improve the long-term performance of the facility. This study aims to find the best ways to apply BIM in facilities management and facilitate access to any information needed at the stage of operation and maintenance to deal with it and improve the maintenance of the building. The Autodesk Revit program was used, which provides many tools and features that help in the process of effective facility management. A practical model of a medical building with various clinics, consisting of two floors and a glazed additional floor, was applied. The Autodesk BIM Interoperability Tools interoperability tool was activated to obtain the full model information and then the fire sprinkler maintenance information was filtered using the COBie Extension for Autodesk Revit standard. The data and information from the building model were exported to an Excel file to illustrate the results in a unified format. Research has shown that the use of BIM improves facility management by providing accurate and comprehensive information about maintenance and operation and facilitates the detection, prediction, treatment, handling and management of maintenance problems more efficiently compared to traditional methods of Facility Management, which are considered more complex. The research concluded that the use of BIM in facility management can achieve efficiency, save time and cost, extend the life of facilities, reduce the field of error, fraud and theft. It is recommended to study BIM accreditation in facilities management, especially for large projects, and learn more about other BIM tools and programs for future studies.

The Integration between Building Information Modelling and Scrumban. Case Study: FD3 Commercial Building in Damascus

Yaman Shker , Lama Saoud

Construction Project Management is one of the most significant processes that require meticulous organization and coordination to ensure the successful project implementation, meeting various criteria. Currently, the need for using modern technologies and methodologies became of utter necessity, in particular with the sophisticated advancements in technology and the emergence of the contemporary project management methodologies. This should be done to achieve the best results when implementing such projects  Existing literature underscores the importance of Agile project management in projects. This is due to its effectiveness in achieving the project deliverables. Agile project management proved to reduce rework and provide assistance in dealing with possible changes that might have an influence on the project progress in the future. This is particularly evident in the current situation in Syria, where a company would take responsibility of the rework costs due to various unexpected uncertainties or risks, resulting in stopping the work on ongoing projects. Rework is considered of the most noticeable problems in the construction industry in Syria, and as a result, the industry is losing efficiency and effectiveness. All such hardships urged the need for more sophisticated methodologies and technologies, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), where BIM proved to be time-, quality-, and cost-effective. This study sheds the light on the application of the Scrumban methodology, the most recent Agile project management methodology, and its integration with the BIM environment in the execution phase in construction projects. This research was based on the experimental research methodology, in addition to exploring the existing literature to provide final results supported by previous experience and the application section to reach optimal recommendations to apply Scrumban in BIM-Based construction projects in Syria in the light of the current practices.

The Importance of Using BIM in Documenting Historical Buildings in Syria after The Earthquake – Case study (Department of Immigration -Old City of Aleppo)

May Baloush , Arch Hala Asslan

Syrian cities and historic sites have suffered severe destruction due to armed conflicts in the past decade, causing significant effects on ancient civilizations. Historic buildings are exposed to dynamic changes like environmental shifts facing challenges especially after the earthquake disaster on February 6, 2023.Many historical buildings were partially or entirely destroyed; therefore, it needs proper restoration, maintenance, and management. Many practitioners in historical building management encounter challenges during the restoration process, including inefficient project management, and project delays. These issues stem from the absence of digital documentation and the updating of information management systems. Historical buildings management still relies on traditional techniques, managing information through various coordination systems by different professionals, leading to a lack of cooperation, and interoperability. This research aims to present BIM as a supportive tool to address these issues. It explores current technologies and their roles in digitization within BIM providing a detailed Historical Building Information Modeling (HBIM) and develops a new integrated HBIM framework for the management of historical buildings in an integrated and interoperable environment that supports 3D digital documentation to maintain a heritage asset and facility management activities. The results indicate that the proposed framework is feasible and effective in achieving information integration and communication among stakeholders.

Impact of BIM implementation in engineering projects in Syria

Lina Alshibly , Mohammad shaban

Engineering projects are often exposed to problems during their design and implementation, due to the lack of availability and accuracy of sufficient information, the failure to set an accurate timetable and budget, and the lack of cooperation and coordination between team members. Therefore, a technology was found to help solve these problems, which is building information modeling. It is one of the most important developments in the field of engineering in general, and the second generation of model design tools is the result of decades of research and development. Through it, one or more virtual models were created to support the design process through all its stages, and it is a simulation of the reality of the real project. In our research, we will discuss the most important problems that engineers face when working on a project, the importance of applying this technology and the benefits it has on the project and its parties, a simplified explanation of it, its dimensions, the stages that the project goes through, and the most important problems that we face when applying it. Building quantities will be studied in the traditional way and compared with quantities calculated through building information modeling technology.

Implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) in Sustainable Urban Design (A comparative study between Masdar City and Marotta City)

Sali Haidar , Mohammad shaban

This thesis explores the utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology in the design of sustainable cities. It provides a comprehensive definition of BIM, with a focus on its various dimensions. The concept of sustainable cities and green buildings is examined as a foundation for achieving sustainable development goals. The thesis also addresses sustainable project phases and how BIM can be integrated into these stages. The thesis emphasizes the role of BIM in enhancing the design of sustainable cities by improving energy consumption and elevating air and environmental quality. The research also delves into how BIM can be used to enhance interaction and collaboration among stakeholders during the design phases. Practical aspects of the research are illustrated through an analytical comparative study between the cities of Masdar and Marotta, with a specific focus on the results derived from the application of BIM in these projects. The research presents practical recommendations that enhance the integration between BIM and the design of sustainable cities. The thesis concludes by summarizing the comprehensive results and recommendations, reaffirming the crucial importance of applying BIM to enhance sustainability in urban design.
